When Ronald Smith graduated from high school, he began plumbing for Civil Service at Dobbins Air Force Base. His brother, Stuart, also lived in Atlanta. Both became dissatisfied living in the big city and decided to return home in Carrollton, Georgia. Upon their return, they opened a grocery store on Bankhead Highway. While working there, Ronald began selling bathrooms door to door. In the 1950s, many homes in the area did not have indoor plumbing. As the idea of people wanting indoor plumbing and home additions for bathrooms, the birth of Smith Brothers Home Improvement began. Stuart was the outside salesman, and Ronald installed the bathrooms. The Home Improvement Company helped them build a Supply Store. Seeing the growth, both men knew they needed someone else to help them manage the supply store. In 1969 their nephew, Ray Smith, joined them to help with Smith Brothers Supply Company. At that time, it was mostly an appliance store. As the supply store evolved, the home improvement store eventually closed.
Throughout the years, the store endured the changes of life. Stuart died in 1982. Ronald retired in 2005, and Ray retired in 2014, but you occasionally you can still find them on the counter greeting customers. Ronald's daughter, Ashley Hendrix, joined the family business in 2014 to preserve the legacy Ronald, Stuart, and Ray have built over the years. She fondly remembers riding around with her daddy on jobs as a little girl and has always enjoyed construction and development. She says, "it has been a joy to help customers see their dreams come to fruition when they are building or remodeling."
Smith Brothers has seen many changes with the growth of the area, but some things have remained the same. Along with a huge inventory, you will continue to receive superior customer service that has been a cornerstone of the company since its beginning.
